Let's get things started

Hello All,
This blog will follow my first steps in an attempt to build my first DIY 3D printer.

I've chosen the Reprap Prusa I3 with a wooden frame because of the following reasons:
  • Open source.(obviously)
  • Easy to upgrade.
  • Lots of Information Online.
  • Using the latest improvements and electronics available.
I've decided not to go with a kit because of the cost.
I'm trying to cut back cost as much as possible, with upper cost target of 1500₪ (~430 $)

When possible, I will used parts salvaged from used printers, scanners and computers.

Phase I - getting the parts

I've concentrated all my ordered parts on the following sheet:

parts that are not included:

Power supply unit - I'm using an old computer PSU.
Wiring - also will be cannibalized from old computers, scanners and printers.
Smooth Rods - using rods from disassembled printer.
Borossilicate glass - planning on using glass salvaged from a scanner.
Springs.
Some of the nuts and bolts.

Possible Cost Reductions:
  • I've ordered both 3mm ABS filament and 1.75 PLA filament just for testing, which can be taken our from the equation since these are consumables.
  • I've ordered an Assembled J-head, since I didn't find any good instructions on assembling.
  • Some of the Linear LM8UU bearing can be found on printers.
  • GT2 Belts can also be found on printers.
  • The printed parts may be produced by any 3D printer - if you're planning on building yourself maybe you can find someone who can print it for you and cut the delivery cost.
  • I've chosen to buy RAMPS1.4 LCD 12864 LCD control panel, which is optional and one of the most expensive available.
  • All the stores in Aliexpress have a frequent "Pay less alert". pay attention to it, I've seen some of the parts already have a small discounts that can add up.
  • Since I live in Israel some of the delivery rate may vary according to your country.

Screw Nuts and threaded Rods

These are low cost parts that are sometimes hard to find.
Buying online is usually not worthwhile because of delivery rates.
Try finding a small hardware store.

The store I've bought from "king Boreg" will usually sell in larger quantities. I was able to get service only because it was Friday.
If you choose to buy from this store come prepared with a list only on Friday.
